In order to obtain consistant measurements, work should always be carried out in line with machine directions, therfore the capillary rise is always slightly higher in cross direction. For example, in sheets of 580 x 600 mm, the side of 600 mm indicates the machine direction. In case of smaller sheets in which it's impossible to see the machine direction. A drop of water on the paper represented by the biggest diameter of the elliptical forms will indicate the machine direction.
